John P. Moglia was born in Chelmsford, England, in 1965. His family had moved there the previous year for his father's work. A year after his birth, his family moved back to Michigan. After graduating from Lahser High School in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, in 1984, his studies and interests took him into public school teaching after earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Michigan State University in 1989. While studying for his undergraduate degree, his focus was on studio art: printmaking and ceramics.
He earned his teaching certification from the Millersville University of Pennsylvania, which qualified him to teach art in grades K-12. Further continuing his education, he returned to Michigan State University, where he earned a Master of Arts in Educational Technology in 2000 after gathering a decade of teaching experience.
